Akiainavas

System Name: Akiainavas
Region: Lonetrek
Sovereignty: Caldari State
Security: 0.7
Planets: 8
Moons: 25
Belts(Ice): 18
System: 4/5000

Well, I logged on today in Akiainavas. I had flown here late last night to give some assistance to a Newbro who was having trouble with one of the tutorials. Yes, technically this means I have visited every system between Renyn and Akiainavas, but I have not written about them yet so it doesn't count. A single School of Applied Knowledge station spins in the distance, but like other systems geared towards new players, Akiainavas is fairly quiet otherwise. Despite having 56 other people in local at the time, I am unable to find anyone in the belts except a Guristas Despoiler. Emboldened by my earlier successes in dealing out great justice, I roll in to attack. As I near engagement range, I am reminded of the awfulness of ECM as my targeting sensors go dead. Still, I persist through jam cycles, frantically pumping my small armour repairer to keep my ship alive as my blasters vainly try to penetrate to armour before my foe can once again jam me. Lacking any beacons to explore in the system, I decide to stay and fight.

God ECM sucks. A stalemate ensues, the Guristas scum unable to break my armour tank, but each time it enters low shield, I am hit with repeated ECM cycles. Finally, a second Newbie Ship appears on scan and takes aggro. Together, we are able to start bringing down the vicious pirate. I watch with bated breath as both the Ibis and the Despoiler tease from frantic shield boosts into armour, unsure which one would fall first. With the Despoiler still holding steady in mid armour, the Ibis flees as it hits structure, and ECM is once again on me, cycle after cycle. Finally, I am able to lock again, just long enough to see the shields of my target nearly full.

I convo my impromptu wingman, and he assures me that he will bring a better ship to assist and, true to his word, a Merlin pops onto my overview. Suddenly, the Despoiler is tragically outgunned. Justice wins again.

I thank my wingman, and decide to check out the services of the station. Hopefully it has dancers.

If you have read this already, and are considering continuing to read, I will be looking into getting an RSS feed set up at some point. Also, if you have not played EVE:Online but would be interested in it, you can be a total dude and check it out using my referral link here: EVE 30 Day Trial. As a money grubbing whore, I will also mention that if you wish to donate isk to help fund this venture you may do so by donating to Vilhjalmur Stefansson in-game. I will give a shout-out to any character donating over 100 million isk, and any character donating over 100 million ISK will also get to name my ship for a day (nothing which will get me banned will count as a ship name)

Renyn

System Name: Renyn
Region: Essence
Sovereignty: Gallente Federation
Security: 0.9
Planets: 10
Moons: 41
Belts(Ice): 7(0)

Located in the heart of the Gallente Federation, Renyn was the site of one of the live events which heralded the beginning of the Sansha Incursions into New Eden. Though no abductions were reported during the event, the existence of the Renyn Meten class of Incursion Rat suggests that some abductions occurred but were not discovered at the time. Perhaps abduction victims were believed to have been killed, or the authorities intentionally covered up knowledge of the abductions.

Renyn VI, one of the first victims of Sansha Incursions

Beyond that, Renyn has proven to be rather dull really. Another typical orange star, local seems to be mostly made up of people who have filtered out of the newbie system of Duripant. The Sansha assault seems to have left no lasting marks on this system, which appears devoid of beacons. I do notice two Cosmic Signatures, but I lack any probing equipment or skills currently, so those will have to wait for another day. I dock up, and make myself a guest of the Federal Intelligence Service for the evening. 3 down, 4997 to go.

Tosquesere

System Name: Trosquesere
Region: Sinq Laison
Sovereignty: Gallente Federation
Security: 0.9
Planets: 9
Moons: 66
Belts(ice): 11(0)

Right next door to Duripant, but through a gigantic regional gate, sits Trosquesere. Housing one Duvolle Laboratories Station, Trosquesere sports an unremarkable orange star, and no real points of interest in space. An utterly unremarkable system, but I am forced to come here if I want to pick up my Pilot Certification Documents at "The Academy." Why I was allowed at the helm of a ship without being certified, I do not know.

The Academy does, however, have a nice line-up of Federation ships to look at, I suppose to inspire ambition in new recruits.

Dwarfed by the bulk of a Hyperion battleship.

Without much more to look at in Tosquesere, and no lore of note I have been able to find, I return to Duripant (which sounds like a stain-free material) once more.

Duripant

System Name: Duripant
Region: Essence
Security: 1.0
Planets: 7
Moons: 30
Belts (Ice): 4(0)

Duripant, the first stop on my journey, with Vilhjalmur starting out in station. I am told by Aura to undock, and warp to retrieve my very first ship, the venerable Velator. She's not much to look at, but she'll do for now. The Federal Navy Acadamy was kind enough to let me use their docking facilities.

Duripant is one of the Gallente starting systems, with a plethora (well, about 30) newbies blundering around while I was exploring. Wanting to try out the New Player Experience, I do Aura's bidding, and go retrieve my Freedom of Operation License, reminding me of the human rights the Gallente Federation cherishes, and which I will be violating regularly in my capacity as a Capsuleer. True to form, I then dash into my combat basics, demolishing a fuel depot, and executing two supposed pirates without any sort of evidence or criminal conviction. Hooray freedom!

For Justice and Liberty! And making things explode!

I dispose of the fuel depot, making no effort to determine whether anyone remains inside, nor considering whether or not the depot is vital to the economy of said deadspace pocket. Or that's what I would be saying, had I remembered to fit my ship.

Oops.
Upon further inspection, Aura had given me a SECOND Velator with the standard Newbie Fit attached, so back I went to enforce the tax code or something. There may have been some collateral damage.
Pay your taxes.
I then move on to dispose of my first alleged Pirates, using only my own discretion to determine culpability, like Judge Dredd of the stars.

Judge Dredd wishes he had blasters.

With the main early tutorials finished, there was just one point of interest left to see in Duripant: the Rogue Cloning Facility, which I had never seen before. Relatively unimpressive to the trained eye, this site seems to provide a good supply of low-level rats to practice those combat skills on. Very quickly, I have doubled my wallet to over 10,000 ISK, and collected a handful of civilian modules which may come in handy.

And with that, my exploration of Duripant is at an end, and I get ready to move on to the next system.

On to the next one!

Introducing Vilhjalmur Stefansson

As I mentioned in my last post, I have chosen not to use one of my older characters in this little project of mine. Instead, I have just started a new character with which I can play around. In danger of falling into some mild Role Playing here, I tried to go for a name which is appropriate for the task.

Vilhjalmur Stefansson, who I must hope never needs account recovery as I will never remember how to spell that name, has been created. I chose the name for one main reason: the real Vilhjalmur Stefansson was a Canadian explorer born to Icelandic parents. Being a Canadian, playing an Icelandic game, with the intent of exploring it, I felt it was fitting. He's wearing a muscle shirt because apparently that is an option now. Deal with it.

Anyways, with my character created, my blog set up to a generic travel template, my writing muscles sufficiently lubricated, and a handy dandy Aura ready to answer my questions, I think it is time to begin.

An Exercise in Self-Importance

As an exercise for myself this year, I have been trying to write more. Not to pursue a career as a writer or anything like that, I just felt that improving on my writing skills will help me in a number of corners of my life.

One issue which has dogged me so far is finding material to write about as I have an office job, which renders my day-to-day life rather mundane. I can only write so many tweets and status updates about transit delays, traffic, and idiot coworkers who I can't go into detail about without getting fired. After some thought, I decided to begin writing about EVE: Online, which I have been playing as a hobby since early 2010 with a couple of false starts prior to that. However, much like my day-to-day life, my EVE presence tends to be less than riveting, most of my days following a general routine which, to me at least, is quite rarely worth writing home about. It became clear to me that in order to properly write any sort of content, I would need a project.

That project began to take shape one bored afternoon when I went a little bit nuts and ended up reading a ton of EVE lore, and I realized how shallow my understanding regarding some aspects of the game really were. There was a whole star cluster out there which I had only had a peripheral interaction with. From mining my first Veldspar, to sitting in the middle of a 4000+ person battle, to stalking targets through wormhole chains, I had never really explored the world.

On top of that, I realized how long it had been since I was really new to EVE. My main character has been constantly subscribed for half a decade (but a brief window compared to some older characters, I know). I haven't had need to start a new character in a couple of years, having acquired a small stable of characters through the Character Bazaar to supplement the handful I had trained up myself, my in-game life revolved around my corps, and whatever the conflict du jour was. Since the last time I had a new character, the New Player Experience system had changed at least twice, most recently with the Scylla release.

And then I put it all together. I would start a new character, train it from scratch, try the new New Player Experience, and, systematically, visit every star system in EVE's K-Space cluster.

And write a little blurb about every single one. If I make it, I will have over 5000 entries, and I can think about trying to visit every J-Space system, but that is a long ways off.

Anyways, I feel that I should have some rules for my voyage, to keep things consistent.
-Region by region, I will visit every single Highsec, Lowsec and Nullsec system in EVE.
-Each system will have its own blog entry.
-I will only use the new character I have created for the purpose of this exercise.
-I can and will use tools like Dotlan and EVE-Kill/ZKb for statistics, general information and things that I can't keep in my head.
-Jumping into a system and immediately burning back to the gate and jumping out does not count. I must warp to at least one object in system
-I will use my older characters as generous benefactors for this journey, because missions are boring for me.
-I will not use another one of my characters as a scout to try and ensure my new character's safety on his journey. Death will be part of my trip, most likely.

Tl;Dr: Checking out the neighbourhood.

See you dear readers all next time.
